Hour of Code

New Jersey Department of Education Deputy Assistant Commissioner Dr. David Greer visits Roosevelt Intermediate School, as RIS and other schools across the district hold Hour of Code activities during Computer Science Education Week.

Oral History and Genealogy

At the annual conference of the National Council for the Social Studies, four Westfield educators recently presented an overview of a popular social studies project in Westfield Public Schools that empowers students to discover and connect their own stories of history through oral narratives and genealogy.
Supervisor of K-12 Social Studies Andrea Brennan and Westfield High School social studies teachers Hilary Haskell, Kimberly Leegan, and Elizabeth Piombino were invited to present at the conference on Nov 30-Dec 2, 2018 in Chicago where the was “Yesterday - Tomorrow: Building the Future of Social Studies.” Click the link above to view a video which briefly summarizes the project, using interviews with educators and their students.

Advisory Group Meeting

Students meet monthly with their small advisory groups. For this month, students had to write a positive attribute that they bring to their group and tape it onto a sheet of graph paper listing the names of all group members.

Teaching the Holocaust and Genocide in Westfield Public Schools

For a 4th year, the Westfield Public School District hosts two important graduate level Holocaust Education courses to equip educators with teaching strategies to implement a longstanding multidisciplinary program in the district that includes age-appropriate instruction in the Holocaust and genocides in the K-12 curriculum.

Honoring Those Who Serve

Students and staff across the Westfield Public School District honored the nation’s military veterans on Nov. 12 with assemblies and other commemorations to thank them for their service and sacrifice.

Westfield Robotics Team Hosts Robo-Ruckus

In its first tournament of the season, the Westfield Robotics Team, That Hertz, competed against 16 other New Jersey robotics teams at the FIRST Tech Challenge Robo-Ruckus on Sunday, Nov. 4 at Westfield High School. This year’s competition required student-built robots to complete such tasks as lifting themselves six inches in the air on a lander, collecting blocks and balls and placing them in specific spots, and other skilled challenges.
