Westfield Public Schools Superintendent Margaret Dolan presented Roosevelt teacher Matthew Kalafat with a Carnegie Medal for heroism from the Carnegie Hero Fund Commission on June 13. Kalafat, who teaches English and journalism, rescued an unconscious woman from drowning at Point Pleasant in September 2016. The Pittsburgh-based Carnegie Hero Fund Commission was established in 1904 by industrialist/philanthropist Andrew Carnegie to acknowledge acts of selfless heroism performed by individuals who have risked their lives to an extraordinary degree while saving or attempting to save the lives of others. “Out of 325-million Americans, the commission chose 18 heroes and your teacher is one of them,” Dolan told students as they applauded Kalafat.
