Learning Science/Engineering Behind Mars Perserverance Mission

There were excited reactions during a student virtual “watch party” at Roosevelt Intermediate School as NASA’s Perseverance rover landed on Mars just before 4 p.m. on February 18.

“When the coverage of the landing started, some students and teachers logged in to participate in the virtual “watch party,” says science teacher Melissa Czerwinski who organized the virtual event with fellow teachers Andrew Bausch, Dominick Ceccio and Katherine Vaccaro.  “We watched the coverage together, discussed the science and engineering behind the landing, and cheered” when Perseverance touched down on the Red Planet.

Czerwinski says the group also cheered when they saw and heard C.J. Giovingo, a friend of hers who is a systems engineer at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Lab.  Giovingo, the lead engineer for the Entry, Descent, and Landing Activity for the Perseverance rover mission, joined students in a virtual session on Feb. 23 to talk about the Perseverance mission and to answer questions.
